Despite not having left town yet to compete in the state tournament, the Kalama High School Boys Wrestling team is already being recognized as state champs.
On Monday, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) named the team Academic State Champions in the 2B Wrestling category for Winter 2022 - a recognition that’s given to the team with the highest average GPA for their activity in each of the state’s athletic classifications.
“This is an amazing accomplishment by our KHS wrestlers, and it’s one that doesn’t come without a lot of hard work and perseverance,” said Kevin Wright, Athletic and Activities Director for Kalama High School. “Congratulations to our athletes, coaches and teachers; Kalama is proud of you!”
WIAA and Gesa Credit Union will present the team with an award on Saturday at the Tacoma Dome during the morning session of the state tournament.
The award comes just a few months after all of Kalama High School’s fall sports teams received either Distinguished (team GPA of 3 - 3.49) or Outstanding (team GPA of 3.5 - 4) team awards from WIAA for accomplishments in the classroom during the first semester of the 2021-2022 school year.
