It’s a full-circle moment for Brandon Walker. The Kalama High School graduate and current Head Coach of the school’s Baseball team has been hired by the Kalama School Board as the district’s next Athletic Director (AD).

Walker will begin his new role on July 1, taking the place of current AD Kevin Wright, who is leaving for a new position at Lakes High School in Pierce County.

A multi-sport athlete during his years as a Kalama student, Walker started coaching in the district in 2011 (KMS Basketball). In 2014, he joined the staff of the KHS Football program, serving as Offensive Coordinator. In 2015, he was named Assistant Coach of KHS Baseball, eventually taking over as the team’s Head Coach.

“It really is a full-circle experience for me, having the opportunity to promote our athletic programs at the same district I played for,” said Walker. “My coaching experience in this district has allowed me to grow as a professional and build relationships with administrators, teachers, staff members, coaches, student-athletes, officials, and many community members.”

In his first year as Kalama’s Athletic Director, Walker said he looks forward to promoting a safe environment for all student-athletes, “so they can enjoy their interscholastic career and reach their highest potential.

“Additionally, I think it’s important that we continue to build upon a winning culture and model respect, accountability, and perseverance when faced with adversity so [students] are prepared for the real-world after high school,” he noted.

As he prepares to step into the role of AD, Walker said he understands the significant role that athletics plays in the community.

“It is very important that we understand the dynamic of Kalama families, and carry on the proud traditions that we have maintained for so many years,” he said. “What I have loved so much about this community is their passion for sports. I can’t wait to continue to support our student athletes in a positive way and be present at their events. I hope to see our community pack the stands at events and look forward to the conversations I have with many families at games!”

Walker’s hiring became official during the regular Kalama School Board meeting on Monday, May 13, 2024.
