AP/College in the High School Courses Offered
What is the difference between AP(Advanced Placement) and College in the High School?
In short, A LOT! Advanced Placement is a standardized curriculum that is taught across the country, and cumulates with students taking a capstone test offered by the AP coursework that results in a score between 1-5. These scores can then be purchased and sent to universities across the country which will award you credit based upon the scores you have received.
College in the High School is essentially a college course offered to you from an accredited institution for direct college credit! No test, no payment, and upon completion with a satisfactory grade, you receive the credits you signed up for! You will be given a transcript from the institutions that offered the classes with your official credits attached. These credits can be transferred to all colleges across the country, though international schools may choose not too.
Some of the courses you take may be tied in with AP, and you are allowed to take the AP test, but it is not required to receive college credit, if the course you are taking are partnered with an accredited institution.
Do I have to enroll in the colleges for credit when I take the course?
No. You do not have to be enrolled in the college for credit to be in the advanced classes. However, the courses are paid for by the school, and the pacing of the classes offer for more time than what you would receive at Running Start. The benefit for taking college courses here is tremendous! You also gain access to all of the same resources and services provided to on campus students.
Do College in the High School classes mean more work? Are they harder?
College in the High School classes are overall more challenging than general education classes taken at KHS. On average you can expect at least 5-10 additional hours of work a week per course you are taking. However, you are also receiving so much more in the process! If you are a handworker and motivated, you will do fine!
What about Running Start?
Running Start is an excellent program which seeks to help students gain college credit on a college campus. College in the High School however, take a similar model, while giving students opportunities otherwise not given on a college campus (see the comparison chart below).
